Makes you think – poverty in America

by Marshall Brain

This new study indicates a remarkable fact about poverty in America:

Study: Half of U.S. kids will receive food stamps

More than 35.8 million Americans used food stamps in July — nearly 6.8 million more than a year earlier, Weill’s group says. About half of food stamp recipients are children, Rank says.

This study is not the only indicator of this type of poverty. For example, roughly half of all children in the United States participate in the national school lunch program, which provides free and reduced lunches to children living in poverty:

National School Lunch Program

The program is for children living in poverty: “Children from families with incomes at or below 130 percent of the poverty level are eligible for free meals.” The program serves a lot of children: “It provides nutritionally balanced, low‐cost or free lunches to more than 30.5 million children each school day in 2008.”
