The new Andriod – enough to take on the iPhone?

This week, Google’s Android operating system enters a new phase with the announcement of version 2.0 (1.6 is the current version) and a stampede of new products. There is also a new ad campaign taking direct aim at the iPhone:

Will it be enough to take on the iPhone?

One reason why Android might have a chance against the iPhone is the fact that it attacks from multiple angles. There are now a dozen phones on different carriers running Android:

“Android adoption is about to explode,” said Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, in an earnings conference call Thursday. “You have all the necessary conditions.”

Schmidt’s forecast may prove accurate with 12 Android-powered devices available in 26 countries on 32 carriers. Recent Android rumors, announcements and releases further fuel the rumble in the mobile community.

The netbook community is also taking a serious look at Android:

“You want to enjoy fast boot and fast power off, almost instant on. Real mobile internet should be at your fingertips – [the new Aspire] takes 30 seconds to power on from cold boot, three seconds to switch off.”

Explaining the company’s decision to go with Android, Wong explained, “user demand is not there for [other versions of] Linux [... but] we never give up. We adjust. We introduce Android with the Windows OS, and why Android? Because it has the best connectivity built into the OS. We believe Android will solve [Linux's] problems with connectivity.”
