What a difference 50 years makes – crashing a 1959 Bel Air into a 2009 Malibu

by Marshall Brain

The following video shows what happens when you crash a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air into a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. Both cars are traveling at 40 MPH:

The last part of the video mentions: “According to the safety engineers at the scene, the driver of the 2009 Malibu would likely have suffered a slight knee injury. The driver of the 1959 Bel Air would have died instantly.”

This article points out some things to notice as you watch the video:

Crash Test: Old vs. New

Watch:
- The windshield on the Bel Air compared to the Malibu
- The driver’s door on the Bel Air compared to the Malibu
- Obvious stuff like airbags and seat belts and collapsing steering columns – the Bel Air has none of this.

Wow, fascinating video. I wonder if the impact on the new car is reduced a bit because the older one absorbs so much of the damage?

This should cure any nostalgia for ‘59 Chevys…
