If you’ve ever locked your keys in the car, you have probably called a lock-out service or asked a police officer for help. They arrive, pull out a thin metal tool and in 30 seconds your car is unlocked.
What happened? They used a device known colloquially as a slim jim to grab ahold of a rod inside the car door. The rod connects to the door’s locking button. You can see the rod on this page: inside a car door.
Using a slim jim takes a little practice, but is easy to do, as seen in this video:
Some newer cars are immune to the slim jim approach. There’s another option that takes advantage of the flex in a car door to create an opening:
