TechStuff‘s Chris Pollette just sent me a link to the trailer for Quirk Books’ next Jane Austen/horror mashup, the follow-up to “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” First, watch the trailer so I don’t spoil it:
On the one hand, tentacles, suckers and all things Cthulhu-esque! On the other … aside from the sibilance, “Sense and Sensibility” may not lend itself that well to sea monsters. One of Jane Austen’s other works might have picked up that material more neatly — namely “Persuasion,” with its hero, naval officer Captain Frederick Wentworth, and its assortment of seafaring side characters. When I think of “Sense and Sensibility,” in which Mrs. Dashwood, Miss Dashwood, Miss Marianne Dashwood and Margaret all wind up living together in a drafty, distant cottage, I think more of land-dwelling monsters. Like werewolves.
Then again, neither “Sense and Sensibility and Werewolves” nor “Persuasion and Sea Monsters” has quite the same ring as “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” Regardless, I’ll probably read the book. (My picture probably made that part obvious.)
“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” was maybe an 80/20 mix of Austen’s work and new stuff. According to Bookseller.com, “Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters” is a 60/40 blend of the source material and original work by Ben H. Winters. The new book is set for publication on September 15, 2009.
