June 2009 Auto Sales: Brace Yourself…

If you recall, back in early April I posted about March 2009 auto sales numbers. At the time, those numbers looked pretty bad, right? Well, hang onto your hat, because the June 2009 numbers are out and they’re painting a pretty dismal picture, too.
I believe that last time I gave you a fair warning that the news was shocking. In fact, I think I said that the stats were downright depressing. So, consider yourself warned once again as you take a look at the June 2009 sales figures as posted by John Neff over at Autoblog.
I know. That’s a lot of red, isn’t it? In fact, only two brands are making any kind of progress over last year’s sales figures and that’s Subaru and Volvo. Yet even those brands aren’t setting any sales records, by any means. Subaru is up a respectable 3.4 percent (613 cars), but Volvo is up by only a very modest .59 percent (41 cars). But then again, check out the rest of the brands on the list and suddenly .59 percent doesn’t look so bad, does it?
If you really want to get to the heart of this gloomy list, take a look at the very bottom of the chart. That’s where the companies are listed. And look who’s on top of that short stack with only a 10.85 percent drop in sales volume — Ford. That’s right, the same Ford Motor Company that refused federal bailout money from taxpayers. I say, good for them. Now, take a glance at the very bottom of the companies list. See anything interesting? I certainly do. That’s where General Motors and Chrysler ended up this time — at the bottom of the pile.
With GM’s sales dropping by 33.6 percent and Chrysler’s sales falling a whopping 41.85 percent, is there anyone out there that still believes that the government-forced bankruptcies were the best move for these companies? It sure is a lot harder to argue that point now, isn’t it?
We need some good news.

Nice, thanks
Cool article

Most companies are improving, with Ford improving the most. GM (-44.7% in march to -33.5% in June) has improved at a rate about the same as the other companies. Chrysler however was worse, but not by much.
Based on GM having LESS loss, I don’t think we can conclude the bankruptcies have had a negative impact on sales.
Besides bankruptcy isn’t about sales volume… it’s better to sell 5,000 cars at a profit than 5,000,000 cars at a loss.
