Fun facts about port-a-potties

by |

You don’t have to search on YouTube for very long to discover that people LOVE to vandalize portable toilets, AKA PortaPotties.

People like blowing them up (muting speakers would be appropriate on these videos – vandals don’t have the best taste):

People like tipping them over:

They light them on fire:

There are hundreds of videos like this on YouTube, meaning that there are thousands of portapotties getting vandalized. But how many? This article has the answer:

N. Carolina law to ban blowing up portable toilets

Carey Mack, operations manager for Raleigh-based Readilite & Barricade Inc., said the company has about 4,000 toilets, and he estimated as many as 200 of them a month are rendered unusable after being set on fire, spray-painted or tipped.

200 a month, or 5% of their inventory. That’s a huge number, because Raleigh is just one city, and the population is about one million. Scaling it up to a national level means that tens of thousands of portable toilets are being vandalized every month.

Other fun facts:
- A new portapotty costs $500 to $750.
- Handicapped accessible port-a-potties cost $2,000.
- They had 5,000 portable toilets for Obama’s inauguration

Looking at this page, it would appear that they had about the right number for the inauguration, assuming that it was a 4-hour event with one million people attending.
