How are juice boxes made? — Sid, Fountain Hills, Ariz.

If you have read How MREs Work, you know that the army stores its “Meals Ready to Eat” in laminated retort pouches. These pouches are basically thin, flexible cans made of aluminum foil and plastic. Once the food is sealed in the pouch and heated, the contents are sterile. As with any canned food, it can sit on the shelf for months without spoiling.
A juice box is another form of retort packaging. It is made of plastic, paper and aluminum foil. In the factory, sterile juice enters a sterile box and is sealed. Because there is no bacteria inside the sealed box, the juice is shelf stable for months. This article contains details on the packaging process.
