A quick scan of the news is often enough to confirm that we’re living in the end times: melting ice caps, failing economies, nuclear weapons tests and celebrity gossip covering all four top spots on the Yahoo front page. If you rent an apartment, you’ve probably been told at some point that renting (rather than buying) is the equivalent of throwing money away. In actuality, the economics of whether it’s better to buy or rent depend on where you live. But there is one instance where renters stand to lose out on money that is rightfully theirs: the security deposit. That’s the check you wrote to your landlord when you signed the lease as collateral against any damage you might do to the apartment. Do no harm, and you should get that money back.

Your first step to reclaiming your renter’s deposit comes before you even move in: Request a walk-through with your landlord. Many landlords require this step anyways, but don’t let them move you through too quickly. Bring a camera and document any examples of wear and tear or damage that already exists. Put all of this in writing and have your landlord sign off on it.

Today, U.S. President Barack Obama presented remarks about the nation’s cybersecurity policies and infrastructure. He said that America’s cyber infrastructure was a strategic national asset and a national security priority. While he mentioned he would create a new cybersecurity coordinator position (also known as the Cyber Czar) within his administration, he did not go so far as to name his choice. But he did lay out some of the responsibilities this new team member will have.
