You asked:
How is liquor made? — Chris, Yorktown, N.Y.
Marshall Answered:
“Liquor” is the generic name for things like whiskey, vodka, and rum. All of these are “distilled spirits”. You start with a beer or a wine. You heat it up to cause the alcohol to vaporize. Then you condense this alcohol steam. It won’t be pure alcohol because some water vapor rises as well from the heating, so you may repeat the cycle several times to further increase the alcohol content.
The best way to see the process is to look at how they make moonshine. Moonshine is a distilled spirit that is often homemade, and therefore uses a simplified process. See How Moonshine Works for details.
