By reading How Lock Picking Works, you can see animations and illustrations that show you exactly what is happening inside the standard pin and tumbler lock. Once you have this knowledge and a little instruction, it is very easy to pick a lock. This video demonstrates the technique:
A faster way to open a pin and tumbler lock is to use a bump key. The advantage of this technique is speed. The disadvantage is the fact that you need a bump key that fits the lock that you are picking.
If the lock contains high-security pins, you use a slightly different technique:

Many cheap padlocks use a technology called a “warded lock”. You use “ward picks” to pick them, as shown here:
