You Asked:
I have one and still don’t get how it works. How do TVs work? — Mariah, Healy, Kansas
Marshall Answered:
The basic idea behind a TV is to paint a series of images on the screen at a rate of 30 frames per second. At that rate, the images merge together in your brain to simulate smooth motion. The images are created on the screen using a large number of colored dots. Your brain fuses all the separate dots together and sees them as an image. On a full-resolution HDTV, there are 1,920 by 1,080 dots. For more information see How Television Works.
There are a dozen different technologies for bringing those dots to your living room: LCD TVs, Plasma screens, DLP projectors, CRT screens, CRT projectors, Laser TVs, etc. Here, for example, is an explanation of Laser TVs.
