You asked:
Why can’t cars run on cheaper cleaner fuels? Why must they run only on fossil fuels? — Allan, Hollywood, Calif.
Marshall answered:
The short answer is: There isn’t a fuel cheaper than fossil fuels. For example, to make hydrogen you have to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, which takes energy, which makes hydrogen expensive. The day there is a fuel cheaper than fossil fuels (that is abundant and as easy to store), fossil fuels are dead.
