Photos – Tokyo’s gigantic G-CANS drainage system

It is one of the largest civil engineering projects in the world, but it is all hidden underground. It is known as Tokyo G-CANS drainage system, and it is gigantic. These photos are a good introduction:

Tokyo’s “Underground Temple” – The Largest in the World

The goal is to provide drainage for the city during typhoon season. The “temple” is an underground chamber with a capacity of about 350,000 cubic meters (roughly 92 million gallons of water). The water pumps out of this holding tank to the Edogawa river.
