Makes you think – the effect of a nuclear bomb

by |

This video is a re-enactment of what happened at Hiroshima after the nuclear bomb detonated there:

This was a tiny bomb by today’s standards, and of the simplest design (for more info on the bomb’s design and yield, see How Nuclear Bombs Work). Yet the effects on the city were gigantic. Nearly everything within a mile of bomb’s detonation was completely destroyed, and the shock wave, radiation, fire and wind affected a much larger area.

If terrorists were ever to get a bomb into a city center, the effects would be similar. If you would like to see exactly what would happen with bombs of different sizes, use this clever implementation on Google Maps:

“Little Boy” (15 kilotons) is the bomb used at Hiroshima.
