Interesting – A huge power surge in Britain

This is both fascinating and funny, but also serious. If not handled properly, the power grid in Britain could collapse.

The problem: when a big TV show ends in Britain (example here is “East Enders”), several million people get up out of their recliners and start electric teapots. They all do it at once, and it creates a three gigawatt spike in demand. For comparison, Raleigh NC (capital of North Carolina, population approximately 1 million people) is served by an 800 megawatt nuclear power plant. Three gigawatts is three or four complete power plants of demand that is needed all at once, and for just a few minutes.
