First there were candles and oil lamps. Then incandescent bulbs. Then fluorescent lights, and more recently compact fluorescent bulbs. Then LED lights, which are still too expensive for household use but work OK in flashlights. And coming soon is the OLED lighting panel, as described in this article:

On a bank of the Mohawk River, a windowless industrial building of corrugated steel hides something that could make floor lamps, bedside lamps, wall sconces and nearly every other household lamp obsolete. You could even make OLED wallpaper, since the material is flexible, one scientist says.
It’s a machine that prints lights.
