How Camel Spiders Work

by Marshall Brain

This recent article talks about an encounter with a camel spider in the United States:

Giant Spider Bit Pet Dog To Death

From the article:

A soldier’s family have been scared out of their own home by a dangerous spider who bit their pet dog to death.

The Griffiths are fighting the war at home against the giant arachnid, who was unwittingly transported back from Afghanistan in paratrooper Rodney’s luggage.

This video shows a camel spider in action:

Camel spiders can get big (about 6 inches across) and they are for real – you can learn more about the myth and reality of camel spiders here. Camel spiders have been known to kill and eat things like lizards. But, is the article about the dog true? Since camel spiders do not have venom, it seems unlikely that the spider alone could kill a dog, unless the dog were tiny.
